Professional career

Tobias Schreiner is a journalist, filmmaker and photographer from Germany, with a special focus on the Middle East. Currently based in Lebanon, he has been working as a freelance reporter, editor, photographer, videographer, TV producer and radio host for German and international media companies. As a filmmaker, he has most recently shot TV documentaries about the repercussions of the Beirut port explosion for ORF Austrian Television, and about the consequences of Lebanon's economic crisis on mental health and drug consumption for ARD's Y-Kollektiv.

He completed his journalistic traineeship at regional newspaper Neue Westfälische in Bielefeld in 2015 and covered the Turkish failed coup d'état 2016 as well as the aftermath of several terrorist attacks in Istanbul for online, radio and print news outlets. From London he worked as a producer for German TV channels ARD and ZDF on Brexit, the 2019 UK General Elections, Donald Trump's visits to the UK, the 2019 NATO summit and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Academic career

Born and raised in Duisburg, Germany's former heart of coal and steel, Tobias holds academic degrees in MSc Middle East Politics from SOAS University of London (Distinction) and in BA Journalism and English and American Studies from the Institute for Journalism, University of Dortmund. He also studied Media and Communication at Istanbul's Bilgi Üniversitesi.

In his Master dissertation, Tobias evaluated how the construction of the mega projects "Istanbul Airport" and "Kanal Istanbul" politically and economically affects one of Istanbul's last rural areas, the district of Arnavutköy and what these mega projects reveal about the connection between neo-liberalism and authoritarianism in the Turkish state.

In his Bachelor thesis, Tobias analysed in a qualitative research how German foreign correspondents in Istanbul used Social Media to cover the failed coup d'état of July 15, 2016.
