Curriculum Vitae

Academic career

Born and raised in Duisburg, Germany's former heart of coal and steel, Tobias holds academic degrees in MSc Middle East Politics from SOAS University of London (Distinction) and in BA Journalism and English and American Studies from the Institute for Journalism, University of Dortmund. He also studied Media and Communication at Istanbul's Bilgi Üniversitesi.

In his Bachelor thesis, Tobias analysed in a qualitative research how German foreign correspondents in Istanbul used Social Media to cover the failed coup d'état of July 15, 2016.

In his Master dissertation, Tobias evaluated how the construction of the mega projects "Istanbul Airport" and "Kanal Istanbul" politically and economically affects one of Istanbul's last rural areas, the district of Arnavutköy and what these mega projects reveal about the connection between neo-liberalism and authoritarianism in the Turkish state.

Professional Career

Since his very first internship at a local newspaper at the age of 16 (Rheinische Post), Tobias has pursued his career path into journalism. He completed his journalistic traineeship at regional newspaper Neue Westfälische in Bielefeld in 2015 and covered the Turkish failed coup d'état 2016 as well as the aftermath of several terrorist attacks in Istanbul for online, radio and print news outlets. From 2017 until 2021 he worked from London as a producer for German TV channels ARD and ZDF on Brexit, the 2019 UK General Elections, Donald Trump's visits to the UK, the 2019 NATO summit and the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2021 he is based in Lebanon, from where he has reported about the Beirut port explosion, the Lebanese economic crisis and its impact on mental health and drug consumption.
