Academic career
Born and raised in Duisburg, Germany's former heart of coal and steel, Tobias holds academic degrees in MSc Middle East Politics from SOAS University of London (Distinction) and in BA Journalism and English and American Studies from the Institute for Journalism, University of Dortmund. He also studied Media and Communication at Istanbul's Bilgi Üniversitesi.
In his Master dissertation, Tobias evaluated how the construction of the mega projects "Istanbul Airport" and "Kanal Istanbul" politically and economically affects one of Istanbul's last rural areas, the district of Arnavutköy and what these mega projects reveal about the connection between neo-liberalism and authoritarianism in the Turkish state.
In his Bachelor thesis, Tobias analysed in a qualitative research how German foreign correspondents in Istanbul used Social Media to cover the failed coup d'état of July 15, 2016.
